What's Your Motivation?

On the Wooded Path - Impacting the World with Compassion

Walking onto a car lot – or even into a furniture store - is difficult for me. You know the feeling. When the salesperson approaches with a gleaming smile and extreme friendliness (too much friendliness) it's uncomfortable. Is their friendliness sincere? Are they in that friendly exchange with an ulterior motive? He’s looking for the sale – right? Can I trust his words? In this situation, I generally put up my guard.

Put yourself in the place of a non-Christian who is approached by a Christian wanting to “share the good news”. Do they view Christians the same way I view the salesperson? The truth is that many of them they do. They see our friendliness as fake. They put up their guard because they believe we have an ulterior motive. We’re looking for the sale – right? In a study by the Barna Group, “Young outsiders (those looking at the Christian faith from the outside) generally do not get the impression that Christians have good intentions when it comes to trying to ‘convert” them. Most reject the idea that Christians show true interest in them as individuals.” “Only one-third of young outsiders believe that Christians genuinely care about them.” “Rather than being genuinely interested in people for their friendship, we often seem like spiritual headhunters.” (Unchristian by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons; copyright 2007)

Here's a great example: I recently attended a training for an upcoming event at a local church. The trainer concluded with, "The whole purpose is for you to get people to receive Jesus Christ."

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Basically, if you have the best sales pitch, most eloquent speech, and can deliver a moving message, your words are empty if you do not present them from a place of love. If you know the Bible backwards and forwards, understand its truths, and can share those “features” with great skill, it is just annoying noise without love. If you feed the homeless, help the poor and sacrifice all for the kingdom of God, it is meaningless action if it is not done with compassion and love.

Love is patient. (1 Corinthians 13)
Love is kind. (1 Corinthians 13)
Love does not seek its own way. (1 Corinthians 13)
Love must be sincere. (Romans 12:9)

Christ’s love is sincere. When he physically walked the earth in ministry, he saw into the depths of a person's soul. He listened to people's stories. He ministered to their needs. He invested himself relationally in the lives of individuals. No conditions.  He proved the sincerity of his love when he gave his life to save you and me. Love for the Father and love for his creation drove everything he did - and drives everything he does in hearts today. Jesus taught that the most important commandments are about love. Love is meant to be the indentifying mark of his followers (John 13:34-35).

So here’s a question for you. As you approach people to present your sales pitch and win another soul to Jesus Christ, are you driven by love for God and love for people (Matthew 22:37-40) or are you driven by a love for the “sale”? Are you loving people for Christ or are you looking for a way to build your Christian resume? Will your witness repel people from Christ or give them a desire to move into His arms? How do you respond when someone rejects what you're offering? These are tough questions to ask, but they are very important ones. Consider how the world’s view of Christ and Christianity might change if we could be a clear reflection of his heart as we learn to purely love.

Warming the World Together,
Lisa~

The Mysteries of God

Mountain View Mondays - Stealing Your Breath with Views of the Heart of God

O God - I stand in wonder as I consider the mystery of you.

With a word, you formed the heavens, the earth, and everything in it. With great finesse, you created every living thing with an intricate design.

Just as no two mountains are alike - their peaks, elevations, and faces taking their unique place in your landscape - no two humans are alike - each created for a distinct purpose in your kingdom. Help me to embrace my uniqueness and to refrain from desiring to be like anyone other than my true self.

Fun at Camp - Summer 2010
I marvel at another great mystery of you . . . your ability to be three persons in one - God the Father; Jesus, the son; and the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, you are God with me - the breath of heaven empowering, guiding, teaching, comforting, and loving me. I acknowledge your presence here with me and I am grateful for the indescribable joy of being close to God through you. God, I know that it is not your intent just to meet me in church on Sunday morning. You desire to go with me and to experience each day by my side. I am hungry for more of you Father. Breathe your Holy Spirit into me. Teach my heart. Restore my body and soul. Be forever near me.

Another great mystery that perplexes me but also makes me grateful, is the mystery of your love for man. Even though I am imperfect and unworthy, through your grace, you implant special God-given abilities within your family members. Help me to acknowledge, discover, open, and use the precious spiritual gifts you have given to me for the benefit of others, and for your church.

Though there are many gifts, there is one Spirit that empowers us all. Though we each have unique purposes, it is just one Lord we serve together.

Lift Your Eyes

Mountain View Mondays - Stunning Views of The Heart of God

(You'll need to turn down - or turn off - the music on my playlist at the bottom of this post in order to hear this clearly.)

My friend, know without a doubt that YOU have already won God's heart. Yes, you have - and it has absolutely nothing to do with the good things you've done for others, or the number of times you've gone to church, or how much money you've put in the offering plate, or how many passages of scripture you've memorized, or how many prayers you've prayed, or how many of his rules you've followed.

Nothing you've done can steal his heart away from you. No amount of mistakes, abortions, addictions, affairs, pre-marital sex, breaking of the law, or breaking of the rules. No amount of shame or the bitterness of regret.

You are in God's heart whether you're a Christian or not. His love is not reserved for one and not the other. He loves all of us stumbling, staggering, complicated, messy people because he is good.

You have value simply because the God who created the stars in the universe created you, and he paid a very high price to rescue you from the punishment you were destined for because of your inability to live up to his standards. The price paid for your rescue was a life - the life of God's son. The price he was willing to pay to redeem you determines your value - not what you do or don't do. Your value isn't diminished by horrible mistakes. The same price was paid for the murderer and the saint. The value of every person is constant because of what God did for us. The life given was of immeasurable worth. That makes you a priceless treasure in the heart of God - whether you're a Christian or not - whether you're an awesome mom or not - whether you're a great student or not - whether you're divorced or not - whether you had your baby or not.

So:

Slow down your busyness.
Slow down your shame.
Slow down all your regrets and let me wash the hurt away.

Cuz' I want you to know
That I won't let you go
I'm holding on. Love's holding on.

Lift your eyes my children.
Lift your eyes my love.
Lift your eyes my children.
This heart, you've already won.
